Layers and masks

Build a composition with separate photo, text and shape layers. Reorder layers, change opacity, use blending controls and organize related content into groups. Layer masks let you hide and reveal areas while retaining the underlying image.

Gradient Fill layers offer editable gradients and masks. Embedded Smart Objects keep source contents available in a separate document tab, with supported edits saved back into the parent composition.

Selections and retouching

Choose marquee and lasso tools for geometric or drawn selections, Magic Wand for color-based selection, or the brush-based selection tools for more interactive work. Object Selection and subject-related tools can require a model download on first use.

Retouch with clone, healing and related tools, then inspect the result at useful zoom levels. Automatic selection and healing results depend on the image; refine edges and check fine details before exporting.

Editable text and shapes

Add horizontal or vertical type, choose fonts with visual previews and adjust supported character and paragraph properties. Keep text in text layers when you want to change wording later. Rasterized lettering is image content and cannot be edited as original type.

Use shape and path tools for graphic elements, and customize supported fill and stroke properties. Available fonts and font substitution can affect the layout of documents created elsewhere.

Photo adjustments and filters

Use tonal and color controls to develop an image, then apply supported filters and layer effects. Native 16-bit photo workflows retain higher-precision source data through supported operations. Some tools or output formats have different depth or compatibility limits.

See the 16-bit workflow guide and file format reference before choosing an archival output.

Multiple documents and recovery

Open files in separate tabs and move between projects. Automatic browser checkpoints preserve completed edits across open documents, including supported editable layers and Smart Object connections. Recovery does not replace PSD backups and does not restore an undo stack or an unfinished tool gesture.

For reusable working files, follow the PSD editing workflow.
