Working files versus delivery files

A PSD is the working-file choice when supported layer structures must remain editable. PNG, JPEG and most other image exports combine the visible artwork into a finished image. Renaming an extension does not convert the underlying data.

For a photograph, choose JPEG when transparency is unnecessary, or PNG when a lossless transparent image is needed. Use a supported 16-bit PNG or TIFF workflow when preserving native photo precision matters. Always inspect dimensions, profile and output settings.

Know the conversion limits

Importing a file does not guarantee that all of its original metadata, frames, vectors or application-specific features will be retained. EXR export from 8-bit artwork cannot restore lost HDR detail. Linear DNG export cannot turn an edited image back into the camera's original mosaic data. ICO export is limited to a single icon up to 256 × 256 pixels.

Large files are subject to browser memory and application limits. Keep original files, test representative documents, and review warnings before relying on a conversion. Learn more about PSD compatibility and 16-bit photo editing.
